Aztech WL556 repeater

Due to work requirement to work from home for quite a foreseeable duration, I got myself a Aztech DL556 repeater today as my room is having a blindspot for wireless ID.

The installation was alright. I was confused initially after entering the web's UI. I input the repeater's SSID which is incorrect. It should be the AP/router's repeater.

Initially connection through wireless from my Milestones phone does not seems smooth. The signal was excellent though. Then I was to restart the repeater and connect again. Seems ok now..will continue to monitor and update this.
.
I suppose this gadget is under evaluation?

I asked the man in the IT shop. Probably Aztech is the only company selling this at the moment.

Digital Cabinet

I am sourcing for a digital cabinet. Trust me, if you got a SLR investing in a digital cabinet is the next utmost important thing that will never regret. 10 years ago, I owned a F60 Nikon film camera while my buddy has a Minolta film SLR. He has been putting the his camera in dry cabinet for 10 over years and last checked was still in good condition. While mine, already got fungus everywhere..Dont think it's worth anything now.

Dry cabinets has various brands in the market like Aipo, Akarui, Digicabi.

Maybe I just go for analog simple ones.

My first digital SLR - 450d

I got a used Canon 450d yesterday from a friend. It comes with a standard kit lens 18-55mm and a prime 55mm 1.8f lens.

Pretty cool.

Start taking photos. Check out this space.

A new beginning

Had a nice evening dinner with my boss whom flew down from the States. We had a nice meal at the Fosters, an English rose cafe in Holland village.

Then we moved on to Harry for our beer session.

Nice team building.

Next day, I told him about my plans moving on....

Glad to have his blessing boss.

You are the man.

Options

It has been one of a fruitful weekend back to my hometown. The purpose back home originally was to attend my brothers ROM. I was lucky to meet up with my uncle who flew from Melbourne. I have not meet up with him for almost twenty years.
I mentioned I am happy and lucky and over our conversion I learned that he is actually been doing some options trading which I have looked into it for the past two years. I took some initiative to ask a little more from him. Spend a few hours and he willingly shared his experience with me. I am sure this will me invaluable to me one day.

Another colleague had resigned

My best friend colleage that I make in this company had left today. What that means for me? Must I always be the lone person? Cant get a friend that can click and chat?

Wish you best in your new company Mr Goh. ..

KB982110 flaw

I clicked update as per normal windows 7 updates. Then I clicked restart.

Little I know that my PC was unable to complete the patch upgrade and it said that it needs to revert. ANd the PC rebooted. Then it prompt the same screen saying trying to update and failed and then reverting...pls do not switch off.. this was happening for at least past 3-5 times before it allows me to boot into windows 7.

Then I checked on the windows patches applied. This is the one not applied KB982110.

==> Updated
An update. I uncheck the update for this patch KB982110 and rebooted my PC thinking that it will not apply the patch. However it did and applied. This time there is no error. Patch was applied successfully. Thanks.

Promise TX2650

Well, I got my Samsung 1TB F3 hdd after reading various good review from the web.

Happily got the hdd and went home and tried to install the hdd. Boot up fine and into OS. Then launch WebPAM tool by Promise RAID via http.

Great...can only perform RAID 0/JBOD on my two hard disks. My primary is a OS disk. Gosh this is not what I want now. I wish to perform RAID1. But I can't without deleting the primary logical partition. And if I do that, I will loose my OS disk.

I guess I am stuck and just have to get another hdd and then perform a mirror.

Promise raid tx2650

This is a entry level raid card for desktop. I used it for raid setup and plan to use it for raid 0 stripping. However the idea of raid 1 strikes me and I might give it a go not to worry about my file backup. Though it still compulsory to perform backup. But for busy user like me might be a good temporary alternative.

Installation of the promise card in windows 7 is not smooth. I hit into several issue and blue screen as soon as I get the card installed into my pci-e 1x card. I have to unplugged my sata from the card and connects back to on board sata to boot into windows 7. Then I run the installation cd. The windows tries to install a driver for my sata but was not successful. I have to manually update with two driver that comes with the cd. As soon as its done, you are up to go. Point your browser and enter http://localhost:8080/promise

The only issue that I had was the ctrl +f key seems not allowing me into the raid bios upon startup.

Else I am looking forward to raid when I shop for hdd this weekend.

Encoding and transcoding

I was surfing the web last night and bump into this two terms -encoding and transcoding used in video capture and editing.

One website mentioned that encoding is transforming from a looseness ie original contents eg wave files to a loss format eg mp3.

While transcoding is converting from a compressed to a more compressed mode.

I am looking at several cards that does video editing. One of them is the leaktek a taiwan manufacturer. Software used tmpneg 4.0. Very powerful card. Nice card.

Amazon.com,newegg.com,buy.com are several e shopping sites.

I have tried vpost and comgateway for shipping service.

Happy shopping.

My colleague has resigned

Multiple mysql instances

I have been trying a couple of hours today to sort out the multiple instances of Mysql running in the same box of linux.

According to mysql website only a copy of binaries is required. Today I manage to launch the instances listening in different port and socket file. Importantly you need to specify a different data directory.

Run mysql_db_install --user=mysql --datadir=/xxxx

Mysql learning journey

Coming from an Oracle background,  there some learning steps for me to pick up Mysql.

We are using Mysql very 5.148, the latest on Ubuntu. One important feature is to enabled log_bin=on in /etc/my.cnf file. This is equivalent to archive logs feature.

Next we need to take care on how to archive these bin logs before it fills up. I have a cron script that runs and remove binary logs that are a couple of days old. Alternatively, there is a parameter 'expired%' that can specify the validity of binaries log before removed by system.

Work life

Thought it might not be the bottom of my career. Things just goes bad
to worse. I am still surviving. The going gets tough the tough gets
going. I hit into an obstacle where my bosses put all the fences
blockage from preventing me to move upwards, take all the credits of
goodwork that I have done these years. All I get is a giving up seat
to a newcomer. Thanks for your reward. I will persevere. Years later
when I see back this post I will laugh, and gets myself motivated. I
know someone I watching.

Parenting primary school kids

I have a primary 3 boy whom is the eldest in the family. Since young
we have been pampering him, showering him with lots of materials toys,
love and care. This to the extent it brought a not so welcome
personality that we see in him. He became very dependent on us, taking
things for granted, got lots of hatred when reprimanded, he not
showing a loving character towards his 3yrs junior younger sister.

We have tried various way of disciplining him whenever he did things
that are wrong. His resentmet only happened at the time of being
discipline. He will forget thereafter. We are disappointed in him. My
wife has asked to sent him to Sunday school. Will that help if he
can't appreciate god's words.

Orthodontist

Being 33 years young, I have decided to take my gut and patience to try out orthodontic treatment for my jaw and upper/lower teeth.

Treatment is planned to last for a total of 24months, hopefully.

I am into week2 of the treatment now. I am sort of impatient for the results as my teeth doesn't seem to move any. No obvious difference can be seen yet.

MBQ

Installed a 8" subwoofer for my car. It's the MBQ which sits nicely under my Vios driver's seat.

A trip to Kukup

I was just spinning my car hoping to reach a humble 20K within 1 year, still a shy of 1K away now. I dediced to bring my family for a spin to Muar. Cus it is much further away from Singapore and I could make most milage too.

We started journey through Tuas (2nd link), hoping to chalk up more mileage in Singapore. Tuning into local radio, told us that our decision was right. It was about 4pm on a Saturday. The news confirmed that the traffic was heavy in causeway. Cool, lucky for us.

As we breeze through the 2nd link, my son was complaining hungry. Our dear, didn't have a heavy lunch. I search through my Garmin POI, tells me that there is a yummy roti canai in Gelang Patah. I didn't pay much attention to the POI and thought it might be need the exit from 2nd link. Drove past Msia custom, and followed the GPS to the roti canai stall. The GPS kept on directing into smaller inner road passing through Gelang Patah on route to Tanjung Pelepas. Somewhere detour into a local remote village. Gosh, still not there yet. Finally after another 10-15km, found that place, it was closed. Yes, it's afternoon, roti canai in local village is meant for morning breakfast. Good. Drove another 5min, found a mini stall selling groceries, got a bread for him. Oh dear..He must be hungry.

Looking at the destination arrival time to Muar, it showed 7pm compare to 6:30pm earlier. Shall we go? Yes that was the answer. Our clocks shows 5pm. As we breeze past through some trunk roads, found the "'Leisure Farm Resort". There's some publicity and advertisement about this rich area. Many foreigner and Singaporeans have settled there. I decided to drive in and was stopped at the guard house. We manage to have a quick glimpse of the bungalows before making our exit.

Time is getting late. We decided to carry on and the sign board shows our way to Pontian. Well might as well go there as it is a shorter time. Now my turn to get thristy, hungry and need to go to loo. Manage to drive another 30mins before arriving Pekan Nanas, a town that was once famous with a great export of pineapples. Didn't know what to eat there and found the KFC. We have our dinner. Ordered 2 dinner plate plus 2 extra chickens. Yummy Malaysia always serve the best KFC chicken. Never disappoint us.

Time already 7pm. Continue our journey. The GPS is unable to route my route to Kukup or homestay Piai which we found out from one of the signboard.

Never mind just carry on and rely on the local sign board. Manage to pass through Pontian Kechil. And then way on to Kukup. We came to a junction. The police station is a local landmark. On the left turn into Homestay Piai and straight to Kukup.

Well, let's turned into Tanjung Piai (It's the soutern tip most of Asean mainland).

Time is darked. Manoveour our way and manage to find it though our Garmin GPS is unable to route. Lucky us.

We route back our way and went into Kukup town. Here there were ample seafood restaurant that really worth exploring the next time.

We got hold of some fireworks display and enjoyed.
